Advocacy Now:
Oregon’s workforce boards are actively advocating for policies at both state and national levels to strengthen workforce development and address critical labor shortages. Current key advocacy efforts include:
1. Expanding Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Training Programs (HB 3826.)
Recognizing the vital role of the trucking industry in Oregon’s economy, workforce boards are seeking $8.2 million in funding to expand CDL training. This initiative aims to mitigate the projected nationwide driver shortage and support the 77% of Oregon communities that rely solely on trucks for goods transportation.
2. Enhancing WorkSource Oregon Reentry Services (HB 2972)
To reduce recidivism and support individuals transitioning from incarceration, workforce boards propose a $3 million investment to expand WorkSource Oregon Reentry services to all state correctional facilities. This funding is expected to save taxpayers over $3 million and provide employment connections at a cost significantly lower than incarceration expenses.
3. Addressing Workforce Challenges Post-COVID-19 (HB 3669)
In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, workforce boards are advocating for continued investment in the Prosperity Programs which support individuals and businesses most impacted. The Prosperity Programs seek to prepare, employ, and advance thousands of Oregonians, with a focus on reaching underserved communities like people of color, veterans, incarcerated people, women, low-income communities, and rural residents.
