With pre-release planning, employment assistance, and connections to second-chance employers, John found a new job in construction shortly after returning to his community.

For John, the path toward employment began before his release from Eastern Oregon Correctional Institution.

In March 2026, he connected with Marlee, an in-prison case manager working with Opportunity Oregon, to begin preparing for his return to the community.

After his release in April, John moved into supportive housing through Sponsors and immediately began working toward his employment goals.

With help from his case manager, he developed his resume, explored job opportunities, and received referrals to employers willing to give people returning from incarceration an opportunity to rebuild their careers.

His efforts soon paid off. John received a job offer in the construction industry and began working on May 1, 2026, just weeks after his release.

Throughout the process, John remained engaged, followed through on employment leads, and demonstrated a strong commitment to moving forward.

His story shows how early planning, stable housing, and connections to second-chance employers can help people returning from incarceration make a successful transition into employment.
