How Southwestern Oregon Workforce Investment Board used Prosperity funding to remove a critical barrier to career training.
When a Southern Oregon resident enrolled in commercial driver’s license (CDL) training through the Southwestern Oregon Workforce Investment Board (SOWIB), he was taking an important step toward a new career.
But as training progressed, his instructors became concerned. He was struggling to stay focused and engaged, and they worried he might not complete the program.
What they didn’t know was that he was facing a much bigger challenge outside the classroom.
For Rachel, the experience demonstrates why workforce programs need the flexibility to address challenges that extend beyond tuition and classroom instruction.
Prosperity funding allowed SOWIB to respond quickly when a participant needed help, rather than letting a temporary crisis derail his career goals.
His story is a reminder that successful workforce development isn’t always just about providing training. Sometimes, it’s about making sure someone has a safe place to sleep so they can make the most of the opportunity in front of them.
