Tyson was laid off in June of 2015 from a local community college, where he was a Composition instructor and also taught Technical writing. Tyson came to the Yamhill WorkSource Center to complete his “Welcome process”, to comply with one of the requirements of Unemployment Insurance (UI). During the conversation with a staff member, it was suggested that he look into some of the workshops and services offered by WorkSource partners. At that point in time Tyson felt that he wasn’t in need of those services.
Fast-forward more than a couple months, still on UI Tyson learned of Rethinking Job Search workshop and registered for the first session offered in the Yamhill location, February 22, 2016. During the 1st lesson of RTJS Tyson stated “I have applied for more than 250 positions I am perfectly qualified for, and I still have had no progression.” He expressed feeling hopeless and lost with no real direction. During the first week of RTJS he also starting working with Pablo and Robin, both Talent Development Specialist from the WIOA program with ResCare, Inc.
Over the course Tyson discovered barriers that he himself was creating. With the tools and techniques from the RTJS he was able to change his way of thinking and grow intellectually. His confidence grew and he started to ask for help, which for him was a huge deal. He also discovered that the changes and the new found direction was going to take time and effort. Tyson completed the RTJS series and continued to work with both Pablo and Robin, and was consistently recalling things that he had learned in RTJS.
Though his road was longer than he or us would have liked, Tyson gained employment as a Project manager making more than $35.00 an hr. and working full time with benefits. He was very excited to have participated in all the services available. “goes to show that you are never too old to learn.”
